Shop Local this Summer!

Summertime is here – you know what that means. . . it’s Farmers Market Season!! This is big news for the Farm to Fork Capital and our abundance of fresh produce throughout our city. Stock up this season with local and organic produce all summer long. Need more convincing? Below is a guide to all the perks of buying local and supporting your farmer’s at pop up markets around the city.

Why buy local?

  1. Supporting Local Agriculture & the Environment
Shopping at our local farmer’s market does not require us to waste energy and petroleum to ship the food halfway around the world. You are eating food from your own environment, with nutrients curated by your specific climate and region.
  2. Products are Cheaper
You can generally find a variety of fresh, organic produce at more affordable prices than in a supermarket. Stressed about buying organic, or can’t because it’s too expensive? mMany farmers carry products that are not technically “organic,” (as this is a costly and often bureaucratic-heavy process), but their farming process is pesticide and hormone free – so you get safe, nutritious food, for a low price! A win win!
  3. Supporting Local Farmers
Buying local supports human beings and the local economy, instead of massive agribusiness GMO food conglomerates.
Your money will stay in your area and you will be supporting the local farmers who work hard to grow fresh, nutritious, and reliable food for the community.
  4. Less Waste
Shopping at the local market helps to decrease much of the waste that often accompanies grocery shopping. You are encouraged to bring your own bags, and all of the produce is in bulk, allowing you to control (and hopefully eliminate) your use of plastic. Even better, farmers markets often sell bulk items such as organic sprouts, homemade breads, bulk greens that you can mix and match, eggs (re-use your empty egg cartons from home), nuts and seeds, and so much more! Finally, most farmers markets have a station where you can drop off your compost, and even recycle clothing items! Talk to the closest market near you and find out what their protocol is.
  5. Seasonal Produce!
By shopping at the local farmers market, you will always be eating food that is ripe, fresh, and in season. This is important, as eating seasonally allows you the full nutritious benefits the foods have to offer. Supermarkets tend to stock their shelves with unripe products, picked too early and therefore lacking in nutrients.
  6. Non Industrial Farming
Giant factory farms grow massive amounts of produce, shipping it all over the world. Giant corporations run industrial farms, driving local family farms out of business. For the sake of efficiency, industrial farming favors monocultures, where a single field only grows one type of fruits or vegetables. Monocultures sap the soil of essential nutrients, leaving it useless. In addition, these farms are more susceptible to disease and pests. In general, industrial farming (both conventional and organic) is hard on the land, depletes the soil of nutrients, uses industrial chemical fertilizers and/or pesticides, and utilizes environmentally unfriendly practices that are not sustainable over the long-term.
  7. Social
When you shop at the farmer’s market, you are able to actually talk with the farmer who grew the food and truly understand the farm’s growing and processing practices. The farmer’s market is a great place to gather! It is an activity you can do with family and friends and truly come together as a community. The Sacramento Midtown Farmer’s Markets always has a wide variety of different craft and artisan vendors! Don’t Be Trashy

Solutions for Less Waste in a One-Use-Wonder Kinda World

Living a totally waste free life is tough (read: um, impossible?!).Especially when the world we live in, our surroundings and everyday habits make it extremely difficult to stop producing waste. This blog post isn’t meant to drastically change your life or convert you into foraging your food from wild bushes and trees. It is, however, meant to shift your perspective – maybe even enlighten you to the ways that waste has completely taken over our lives – and ask you to change just a few of your habits.

So, how can you reduce your trash footprint, without it totally cramping your style? Here are some simple, practical ways to help get you thinking about your everyday life and your relationship with trash.

1. Recycle, properly

Unfortunately, recycling guidelines are not uniform across all recycling facilities. Google recycling in your town to better understand their guidelines, and always keep an eye out for information about how to better recycle at city-sponsored events. Here is a link to a list of items Sacramento allows in their blue recycling bins.

2. Be more cognizant of the things you throw away

Whenever you throw something in the garbage, be extra mindful about what it is. That way, you will have a better, fuller understanding of what in your daily life produces the most waste. Is it food materials? Paper? Cans? Beauty products? Something else? The more you notice, the more you can aim to substitute the single use items you are using into things that are more sustainable.

3. BYOB (Bring your own BAG)

At this point, this should be a given. Especially in California where there is an extra charge if you use one of the store’s bags. However, take this a step further and invest in reusable produce and bulk bags. That way, you won’t have to use the plastic bags at the store to store your apples, or use bag after single use plastic bag in the bulk section when buying nuts, grains, or granola. Check out some cool options here and here

4. Say No to Single Use Items

This refers to disposable plastics that are used only once before they are thrown away or recycled. These items are things like plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, soda and water bottles and most food packaging. To understand why single use plastic is so destructive, read on with this blurb from

“We produce hundreds of millions of tons of plastic every year, most of which cannot be recycled…Worldwide only 10% of plastic items are recycled. The nature of petroleum based disposable plastic makes it difficult to recycle and they have to add new virgin materials and chemicals to it to do so. Besides that, even the plastic that does get “recycled” cannot all be used. Petroleum based plastic is not biodegradable and usually goes into a landfill where it is buried or it gets into the water and finds its way into the ocean. Plastic will not biodegrade, (decompose into natural substance like soil), but it will break down into tiny particles after many years. In the process of breaking down this way, it releases toxic chemicals (additives that were used to shape and harden the plastic) which make their way into our food and water supply. These toxic chemicals can be found in our bloodstream. And the latest research has linked them to cancer, infertility, birth defects, impaired immunity and many other ailments.”

Ways to reduce your single use plastic:

  • Say no to straws! When you’re out on the town grabbing a drink (or three), or sitting in your favorite restaurant or cafe, get in the habit of asking for your drink “sans the straw.” You don’t really need it, and it will alert others to the concept of reducing these environmental terrors.
    • Shop glass or stainless steel straws here
  • When ordering takeout, ask for just the food. Try to avoid things like plastic utensils, plastic bags, and all the frills that come with a takeout order that are not necessary.
  • STOP using (and buying) single use plastic water bottles! Start carrying your own reusable bottle wherever you go. This will help you avoid waste, AND up your water intake – trust me.
  • Bring Your Own Cup! It’s the new thing, I swear. One of the biggest trash epidemics comes from the multitude of thrown away coffee cups and sleeves. Listen, I know that we’re all busy people and the convenience factor of coffee and other drinks in “to-go” cups is just so tempting – but we can be busy, and enjoy convenience, AND save the earth all at the same time! Bring your own reusable coffee mug when going to your favorite place for joe and ask them to put your drink in there. A lot of places will actually give you a small discount for bringing your own cup! A win win!**Don’t drink coffee? Did you know, you can bring your own reusable cup to Vibe and we will fill it with your smoothie, cognitive coffee, or kombucha? How sweet is that?! Drinking healthy AND saving the environment! Now that’s higher vibes.

5. Start Composting!

Composting sounds like a giant ordeal – What if I live in a city/don’t have a backyard/don’t have access to municipal composting?! Don’t worry! Even you in your one bedroom, can’t see the light of day, apartment building can compost!

First of all, what is it?
Compost is the practice of collecting biodegradable stuff – such as food scraps and food waste – and letting it all quickly rot so itcan turn back into a healthy, nutrient-dense soil. When these materials instead go into places like landfills, they rot slowly and end up releasing harmful greenhouse gases like methane.

So, what can be composted? Everything from rotten food, soiled paper towels, cotton balls, compostable to-go food containers, snotty tissues, cooking grease, bones, to even worn out clothing made of all-natural materials can probably get thrown straight into your compost. Yes, it can be stinky – but it’s still totally worth it.

One way to compost, especially if you live in an apartment without a backyard is by using a leftover paper bag, which you can recycle at a drop-off location, like at the farmer’s market or your city’s closest drop off area. Keep the contents in your freezer until you are ready to drop it off at the market.

The easiest way to compost is definitely municipal composting, where the city comes around and picks up your compost just like they already pick up your trash and recycling. If you don’t have municipal composting (most people don’t), then call 311 and tell your city that you want municipal composting. Also, here is some more info on Sacramento’s composting policies and offerings.

The Truth About (organic) Juice!

Why Organic?

Do you often feel like you spend so much money on juice as it is, why would you spend even MORE to make sure it’s organic? Read on and maybe become enlightened!

At this point, I think we all know the benefits of cold-pressed juice in our day to day lives. After all, it’s 2018, and juice shops have been popping up left and right – making it easy for us to get our veggies in while on the go. There may be many different reasons for your interest in and commitment to cold pressed juice: it is refreshing and packed with essential vitamins and minerals, it’s a fast and easy way to make sure you are getting enough fruits and vegetables into your diet, and it’s a sure way to jump start your journey to a healthier you! Whatever the reason, we are glad you’ve joined the juice movement! BUT! There is one very important element of cold pressed juice that is often overlooked.

What’s that you ask?
The old organic versus non-organic struggle!

To refresh:

certified organic means that products are free of synthetic additives like pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and dyes, and must not be processed using industrial solvents, irradiation, or genetic engineering, according to the USDA.

Also, seeds and transplants must be chemical free and fertilizers must be natural. Animal products labeled organic cannot be treated with any kinds of antibiotics, medications or growth hormones and must be fed with organic feed (Eating Well). There is a bit of controversy about whether or not organic products are actually “healthier” for you despite many studies showing that fruit and vegetable products grown organically contain a significantly higher percentage of nutrients such as vitamin c, antioxidants, zinc, and iron. Regardless, one fact that nobody seems to dispute is that choosing organic products lowers your exposure to highly toxic pesticides and chemicals, which have been linked to various types of disease and illness. Organic products are often more expensive than conventional ones because organic farming is much more labor intensive, due to the lack of pesticides. Furthermore, it is expensive for farmers to maintain their organic label, as many organic producers have less supplies due to the fact that their products spoil more quickly (because no pesticides or additives, see the trend?).

Back to the question at hand, why should you always make sure your cold-pressed juice is certified organic?

Regardless on your stance of organic vs. non-organic (“haven’t you ever heard of the Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15 lists?” you may ask), it is extremely important that cold-pressed juice is bought organic because of the high pressure process that the produce is going through in order to get you your fresh squeezed, cold pressed, juice.

To understand, we should take a look at how exactly cold-pressed juice is, well, pressed. Cold pressed juice is made with a special juicer that uses a hydraulic press and slow pulverizer to juice the fruits and veggies. This kind of juicer is different from the more familiar, centrifugal juicer, which generates heat. Cold pressed juice can help ease the strain of detoxification on your body. They’re chock full of nutrients that are geared towards fighting toxins and boosting immunity and health. Cold pressed juice is so potent and instantaneous because it lacks the fibrous pulp of the whole fruits and vegetables. Since the body doesn’t have to break the fiber down in the digestive system before being able to be used, cold pressed juice is like a lightning bolt to the system. The nutrients immediately enter the body and start getting to work.

So, you drink cold-pressed juice vs. that heated, highly processed stuff – good work! However, when you’re buying non-organic cold pressed juice, you are mainlining toxic pesticides directly into your system (yuck). You see, in cold-pressed juice, the product is bottled, sealed and put in a large chamber, which fills with cold water and applies a crushing amount of pressure to inactivate pathogens. Cold-Pressed juice that you find in bottles starts out by using huge hydraulic presses that press fruits and veggies through fine mesh getting out all of those delicious nutrients and leaving only the pulp of the fruit. When the extraction process is done, you get naturally vibrant juice, that is bottled and High Pressure Processed. So if you are choosing to invest in a juice, why would you choose one that basically presses the most concentrated form of pesticides and chemicals into your body? Especially when some pesticides have been linked to a plethora of diseases and conditions. So yes, buying organic may be a tad more expensive. But in the long run, with a bit of a heftier investment now, you are choosing to save later, choosing your health over a lower price.

So when that juice craving kicks in, don’t fight it! But make sure to look for the certified organic sign to be sure you are giving your body the very best it deserves!

Seasonal Self Care

Mindfulness Tips to Maximize your Health and Well-Being During this Hectic Holiday Season

It’s starting to be that time again – the most wonderful time of the year! However, the most wonderful time often finds you at your most run down, stressed, and exhausted. It is the season you are more likely to overcommit, over-indulge, and put everyone first but yourself, leaving you frustrated, worn out, and anxious by the time the new year rolls around. Because stress taxes our ability to be creative and fully take in all the wonderful experiences and memories being made all around us, now is the time and t’is the season to prioritize your self care!

So, how do you get rid of stress in your life? How do you will yourself to calm down, relax, breathe, and take in each and every moment? Well, studies have shown that, contrary to what we think, stress is PURELY chemical and is triggered by the limbic system, which means that the problem is not the stress itself, but how the limbic system interprets the data it receives. In other words, we CAN change it! For this reason, in order to combat our stress, we must train the limbic system to take the information it receives from our five senses and interpret it in a way that sends the data up to the neocortex instead of down to the brain stem. We rely on the neocortex for creativity, compassion, clear decision making, and general happiness, whereas the brain stem carries a build up of cortisol, the chemical that manifests as stress.

Okay, enough with the science lesson. How do we achieve this? What are some easy and effective ways to incorporate more self care into our daily routines? The next few paragraphs are dedicated to three lifestyle habits that have been effectively proven to lower our stress and help us indulge in the self care we so deserve. These “mindfulness” practices – sleep, a well balanced, nutritious diet, and yoga, can help alter the chemical makeup in our bodies to release serotonin and endorphins – the ability to think clearly and feel better – instead of cortisol. But first, a little background.

What is mindfulness anyway? You may have heard this buzzword recently. . . mindfulness. But what is it exactly, if not just a fancy term thrown around among health gurus and fancy yoga practitioners?

Mindfulness is defined as living in the present moment, while calmly acknowledging one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. These techniques are great tools to manage stress, improve sleep, and avoid illness.

There are many things in our world today that exacerbate stress and chaos in the mind and body. Media multitasking, for example. Contrary to popular belief, the MORE you multitask, the WORSE you actually become at it.  To achieve mindfulness and combat stress, we must embrace the beauty of mono-tasking. For starters, this means, get off your cell phone! According to a study done by neuroscientist, Earl Miller, every time you switch your focus from one thing to another, a switch cost occurs: aka, the brain stumbles, and it is hard to get back to where it was before the distraction occurred. When your brain becomes accustomed to checking a device every few minutes, it will struggle to stay on task even when it is not interrupted by digital alerts. So, not only will constantly checking a media device take away time with loved ones, it is also proven to snatch the gray matter in the section of our brain that is involved with thought and emotion control! WHAT! Additionally, it is associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety, and poor sleep.

Which brings us to our first stress-free solution: Sleep.

Sleep is vital for rehabilitation of the body, mind, and spirit. Without sleep, the susceptibility to illness, fatigue, anxiety, stress, and brain fog is much more present.
Research shows that establishing a repeatable, nightly routine that is most conducive to a sound sleep will help the body fall asleep and stay asleep during the night. Some ideas for a nightly routines are as follows, but you can get creative and make up your own routine that is convenient for your daily life! Have fun with it!

Eat a light meal 2 hours before bed, shut off electronics one hour before sleeping, establish a repeatable and consistent evening routine including taking a bath or shower, stretching, drinking tea, observing your day and extending gratitude for the events that unfolded. In addition to a consistent evening routine, you can choose activities during the day that will aid in a sound sleep at night. These include getting exercise and spending time in natural light, as artificial light throws off the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Also, avoiding caffeine after noon, feeling fulfilled during the day by doing the things that make you feel happy and productive, and finally, eating well rounded, nutritious meals made up of organic, whole ingredients.

Nutrition is a huge component to lowering stress and achieving mindfulness.

Nourishing the body with the nutrients it needs will allow us to not only survive, but thrive. While the trend is just beginning to shift, the average American tends to more readily reach for the sugary, highly processed, “fast” food, out of convenience, affordability, and pleasure. However, this abundance of fast food, sugar, and caffeine can lead to very low quality of living: poor sleep, excessive stress, breakouts, low immune system, foggy brain, sluggishness, weight gain, etc. We need to shift this trend and get behind the idea of mindful and plant-based eating simply for the good of our own bodies and the well being of the environment around us. This refers to eating seasonal, local produce when available and living in a way that is mindful of the connection between the source of our food and the nourishment it provides to our body. Basically, it means understanding where our foods come from and being curious and inquisitive about the process. Eating seasonal, local produce, as close to its most natural state keeps you in tune with the seasons and by extension, your own inner needs. It also guarantees that you are eating foods in their most nutritious and beneficial state.

When it comes to a plant-based diet, this simply means getting most of your nourishment from plant-based, whole foods: fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds – foods that are in their simplest state. Not necessarily following a strict vegan or vegetarian diet, but simply limiting our intake of meat, and being mindful of where and how we acquire it, which is better for our bodies as well as the environment.

Of course, with everything in life there is a balance. Strictly depriving yourself of foods you love will only backfire in the long run. It is important to maintain a balance between eating and buying healthy foods and indulging in your favorite treat every once in awhile. The most important takeaway is the concept of eating mindfully. As previously discussed, mindful eating involves paying attention to what your body needs and what it doesn’t. It means becoming curious about your internal cues and asking your body what it really wants. Is it food? Or is it water, sleep, exercise or something else? By promoting self compassion, you may inhibit stress eating. The quality of foods you eat and the attention you give to the act deeply affects your health and consciousness, as well as your digestive system, allowing your body to detox, eliminate, and rebuild immune function as efficiently as possible.

One final way to combat stress, focus on breathing, and work toward a state of mindfulness in your everyday life is a consistent yoga practice.

Yoga is a powerful tool designed to rejuvenate the spirit and prolong life using radical techniques to cleanse the body and mind by breaking the knots that bind us to our physical existence (Elise Greig, Saptarshi Ray). It focuses on the exploration of the physical-spiritual connections and body centered practices, which is exactly what the concept of mindfulness urges us to do: become more aware and in tune with our body, breath and emotional thought processes.

Yoga is said to counteract depression and anxiety and is often practiced as a therapeutic tool. It encourages you to tune into your sensations and give your body gratitude for the multitude of things it allows you to do each day. When practicing yoga, the mind is occupied on strength, serenity, and space, instead of all the tiny worries and anxieties that we carry with us throughout the day. It is a chance to breathe, to decompress, to practice mindfulness and be present in our sensations.

So, as this holiday season approaches and you find yourself beginning to crumble under the weight of the shopping, cooking, driving, conversing, gift buying, party going, decorating, the list goes on – stop. Light a candle and take a bath before bed, make yourself a green smoothie before running out to all the errands, take a yoga class, and above all, acknowledge you. Forgive yourself, don’t be so hard on yourself, love yourself. Show up for you. It is so, so important.

Special Guest Interview with Don Arnold of Fit Eats!

Don Arnold is the founder of Fit Eats, a healthy and fresh pre-made meal delivery company in Sacramento and Roseville, CA. A young entrepreneur with a business background and passion in health and fitness, Arnold molded Fit Eats out of a small, local firm, and expanded it to deliver tasty, restaurant grade, healthy meals to a customer base of about 18,000 – mainly in the Sacramento area. Fit Eats offers only the highest quality and locally grown ingredients, with zero processed additives or GMOs, plus Paleo as well as plant-based options to satisfy all kinds of diets and lifestyles. The company changes up its menus week to week, offering a choice of about 40 different breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Fit Eats promises healthy, wholesome meals that are readily available – no cooking, no cleaning, no mess! To learn more about Don, his business, and their relationship with Vibe, read on!

What is the Fit Eats story? How did you get started?

I have no history in food service, however I’ve always been in the health food industry in some way. In college, I was a personal trainer, and then I opened a chain of nutrition stores shortly after. I started this company in January of 2014, drawing inspiration from a similar company in Austin, Texas. I felt their “meal prep” style concept was an idea that would thrive in the Sacramento area, with an added layer of offering delivery (the Austin company did not include delivery in their services). I thought delivery was an especially important element for convenience, so I actually started Fit Eats as just a delivery service, and then later moved into a retail store in Sacramento about a couple months after opening – in April of 2014.

What makes you different than other restaurants, grocery stores, or delivery services?

The main difference between Fit Eats and other meal prep and convenience meal companies is that our menu changes weekly. Every Thursday at noon, we take down four items and add four new ones. This keeps it fresh and exciting and makes so that customers do not get tired of eating the same thing week after week.
Additionally, we are not just a meal prep company but a real, healthy, wholesome food company, preparing healthful meals for the masses. I always want to focus on how we can contribute good, nutritious food to a large range of people. So instead of limiting our focus to bodybuilders, or fitness guru’s following the rigid “one carb, one veggie, one protein” meal plan, we offer tasty, restaurant experience food made with healthy, quality ingredients.

What is the inspiration behind Fit Eats?

I just found a need for it. There are not a lot of places [in Sac] offering exactly what we do. I mean, everyone’s idea of healthy is different, but I wanted to create a place that everyone would be able to find something. Something easy and healthy for all to enjoy – not just hard core body builder “high protein, low carb” meals, or vegans and vegetarians serving exclusively plant based meals. I wanted to be able to offer as many choices as possible to please the majority of my community with healthy, delicious, and convenient options. Many of our meals do cater to plant based, or diet sensitive lifestyles such as Paleo, gluten free, or vegetarian, but the idea is to provide good nutritious food for the entire community.

How long have you been a wholesale partner with Vibe Health Bar?

Pretty much right when they started their wholesale program. About 6 or 7 months I would say.

What do you think makes the partnership work?

Well, cold pressed juice goes hand in hand with what we offer, as a nutrient dense, whole food, meal outlet and delivery service. The juice trend is growing fast, so why not jump on board? Plus, it is a lot easier to outsource the juice because we want to focus on what we do best – prep whole meals for customers who are on the go – and let the professionals stick to the juice. Vibe Health Bar with Liquidology has such a good reputation for quality juices in the Sacramento area, so it just makes sense.

What is the reaction customers have when they see cold pressed juice sold along with your healthy pre prepared meals?

I think they’re pretty excited about the juices. I mean, when it’s hotter out, we sell more juice because of how refreshing it is.

What is your favorite Vibe/Liquidology juice and why?

Bottle rocket – I really like the watermelon

Where are you located?

We have two locations:
One in Roseville at 1455 Eureka road, and another in Midtown Sac at 1420 16th Street.

For more information, visit their website at and be sure to stop in for a healthy meal and a cold pressed juice!

Why our “Cognitive Coffee” should be part of your morning routine…

What is Cog Coffee anyway?

Our Cognitive Coffee blend contains a mix of local Chocolate Fish coffee grounds, MCT Oil, grass-fed butter, our 3 Mushroom Blend, and your choice of either vanilla or cacao flavor! All blended up to create a frothy, rich, mood enhancing beverage to boost your energy and heighten your focus without the mid-afternoon coffee crash – hence the name “Cognitive Coffee.” Get it?!

MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides, which are a type of fat found in coconut oil that is easy for your body to digest. MCTs do not need to be broken down the way other fats do, and instead are sent straight to the liver where they get turned into fuel for your body. Here, the MCTs are immediately turned to ketones, which are primary fuel for brain and muscles. They are not stored as fat, but are actually used to help speed up your metabolism, aiding in digestive health, weight loss, and hunger satisfaction. When combined with coffee, the ingredients work together to keep your energy levels sustained without the usual coffee crash. The best part? You can’t even taste it! So you are getting all these benefits without affecting your coffee experience. In fact, it actually enhances your morning coffee by making it even more thick and frothy – not to mention all the positive side effects going on inside your body.

3 Species Mushroom Blend

Our special mushroom blend helps to boost cognitive function by providing a huge dose of mental clarity to clear the brain fog, and thus adding a sustained level of focus for your day! Not to mention, it is extremely high in antioxidants, it helps to combat stress and lower anxiety, and even regulates your blood sugar. Caffeine + focus? Too good to be true!

Grass-fed Butter

Pairing grass-fed butter (a healthy fat) with coffee helps to trigger the body to go into fat burning mode, as it metabolizes the caffeine more slowly and fights against the caffeine crash and coffee jitters later in the day. It is also high in omega 3, an essential fatty acid, and includes many important vitamins such as vitamin A (essential for normal vision, a healthy immune system, and reproduction), D (fights disease, reduces depression, boosts weight loss), E (acts as an antioxidant, protects against toxins in the environment), and K (builds strong bones, prevents against heart disease). The butter gives the coffee a rich and full flavor that may take a bit of getting used to, but will leave you coming back for more.

Other benefits of our Cog Coffee?

-Your choice of Mocha (we add in a tablespoon of organic Cacao powder) or Vanilla flavor (just a shot of vanilla extract and a pinch of cinnamon)

-No added sugar!

-All organic, local, and quality ingredients.

Read on to learn more about Roxanna!!

Where are you from?

I grew up in South Sacramento, went to high school in the Elk Grove area and now live and work in Sacramento!

Which University did you attend and what was your degree in?

I went to Sacramento State and pursued a bachelor’s in Family And Consumer Science, or FACS, with a concentration in nutritional sciences. As I began learning more about nutrition and a well balanced diet, I was led to switch my major during my 3rd year at Sac State. I realized that my passion really was in health and wellness and I ended up switching my major to food and nutrition. I absolutely fell in love with it.

What got you interested in the health and wellness community/what was your biggest influence?

Growing up, I was not very aware of nutrition and eating a well balanced diet. I was raised eating a traditional Mexican cuisine, even though my sister had dietary restrictions and ate a diet much different than the rest of the family. I always wondered why we didn’t just all eat the healthy, well rounded meals that she did. In high school and college I went through some health issues which led me to eat and cook according to my body’s need. I realized that if I could do that for myself, I could also bring awareness to those who don’t have access to nutritional education, and/or to healthy foods. In the community I grew up in, there were no healthy alternatives in school lunches, which baffled me. As an athlete, I felt it was imperative to have access to healthy, nutrient dense food, as well as supplementing with nutrients to enhance performance.

When did you begin working at Vibe and why?

I started working at Vibe within the month after they opened…so, since the beginning of March or so. It’s funny, but something drew me to this specific shop. The owners shared my vision for health and wellness, it was a local shop centered in community, and it had a commitment to bringing the education of healthy living to the community.

What is the biggest nutrition myth you’ve heard that you are determined to combat?

I think people get so caught up on making sure they don’t eat carbs, staying away from fat, or forcing themselves to do tons of cardio, even when they don’t feel like it. For me, as an athlete, I know my body needs a lot of carbs in order for me to function. They are actually good and healthy for you – essential to a well balanced diet. But so many people become easily influenced by the trends that come out on a daily basis telling you to be scared of certain foods. Everyone has a different metabolism and it is all about balance in order to be healthy. I can’t stick to a strict clean eating diet. I really don’t think diets work at all…in a lot of cases they actually hinder your health. A balanced lifestyle is what truly works to maintain an overall healthy life. I encourage people to get educated on what they are eating and really take a look at what works for YOU.

What is your favorite food?

Oh my gosh, I love food haha. I usually eat a lot of Mexican food, as that is what my family generally cooks, and is what I grew up on. My ideal plate or dish, though, would have to be a lean meat (probably carne asada), tortillas, guacamole and a salad.

What is your favorite thing on the Vibe menu – to eat as well as make?

To eat, it would definitely have to be the Cacao Town with kale. It’s a guilty pleasure but then the added kale makes it healthier, and it’s actually really good.

To make: hmmm, it depends if it’s busy or not haha. If it’s slow, the Unicorn Bowl is my favorite thing to make because it’s super creative. Most of us love to decorate and really take our time with the food art, so if we have time, the bowls are generally the most enjoyable.

When do you feel best in your body?

For me, it’s when I exercise. I definitely have to make sure I eat enough during the week when I exercise though, as my metabolism. It’s hard for me to keep weight on, so it’s better for me to exercise and eat enough to maintain my weight. One of the most important meals for me is my recovery meal, and making sure I eat in the time span optimal for my body to absorb the most nutritional benefits after exercising. My ideal post workout meal is a lean protein with fast digesting starchy carbs (grilled chicken with potatoes and veggies). If I don’t have time to cook, I love the Purple Butter smoothie we make at Vibe, with added hemp protein + a We Got the Beet or Vitality juice for hydration and energy.

Guilty pleasure meal?

Oh, for sure an In n Out double double cheeseburger protein style with chile’s, and fries.

What inspires you?

In my overall life, my sister inspires me, as she was born with special needs and was given a life she didn’t choose but had to adapt her lifestyle and abilities to do the things that most of us find simple and unimportant. She is just the happiest girl ever, even with all of her challenges. I think some people are given all of these opportunities that they just take advantage of and don’t appreciate the things that they have just handed to them. My sister has so many abilities that are yet to be discovered and developed. She can’t talk, but she knows how to eat on her own, and her social skills have really improved over the years. Additionally, she plays soccer and goes swimming and does tons of normal things on a daily basis! We are really close. She’s my anchor.

On the nutritional side, I am so inspired to educate people on their health options and give them the tools to make the best health decisions for themselves. I always look at my sister, who didn’t choose her lifestyle or circumstance, and think how I can influence those who CAN choose, to lead their most fulfilling and healthy life.

If you could tell our Vibe customers anything about their health journey, what would it be?

I want people to actually realize and understand that everyone’s journey is different and their bodies react differently to foods. They do not and should not have the same goals or ideals as other people. They don’t have to follow the trends to be healthy or copy the health and fitness models and gurus to have a happy life. That path may not work for them. Patience is key. Finding a way to stay motivated is one of the hardest parts on a fitness and health food journey. It is essential that we have long term goals that are reachable and achieve a balanced journey. Even though you may take longer than someone else, you will get there!

What is your email/contact info?

I am in the shops about 3 times a week as the nutritionist on staff. If a consultation in the shop doesn’t work according to your needs please feel free to email me at  Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Be selfish and indulge in your own self care!

Meet Your Matcha

Matcha is the ‘new’ trend making waves in the food world for its incredible health benefits and its delicious flavor, but this ancient drink has been enhancing lives in Japan for over 1000 years, where it is revered for its mental & medical remedies. It may have taken a while, but the power of matcha is finally becoming known all across the world and is changing the way people fuel their lives.

Matcha is a fine powder of ground whole green tea leaves. Unique from other teas, it is the only tea where the entire leaf is consumed. Only the strongest growing green tea leaves are selected for matcha production. They are then shade grown for the last three weeks before harvesting and the stems are removed before the leaves are ground into a fine powder. Matcha is traditionally prepared by whisking a scoop of powder with hot water until frothy.

Before tea was considered a casual beverage, it was considered a medicine. Of all the teas on earth, matcha is the ultimate medicine.

-Matcha is the highest source of antioxidants per gram (ORAC=1573) with the next highest source being goji berries (ORAC=253).
-One serving of matcha has the equivalent amount of antioxidants contained in 10 cups of normal brewed green tea
-Matcha is bursting with catechins, particularly EGCG, which is the most potent & beneficial antioxidant- known to prevent cancer & heart disease and is effective in reducing inflammation & slowing cartilage breakdown
-With its incredibly high levels of chlorophyll, matcha provides oxygen to the tissues, detoxifying & creating a healthy alkaline pH in the body
-The catechin EGCG in matcha has been found to raise the body’s thermogenesis (the body’s own rate of burning calories) from 8-10% of daily expenditure to between 35-43% of daily expenditure
-At the same time it oxidates fat & limits intestinal absorption of fat, all while not raising blood pressure or heart rate
-EGCG is proven to fight skin aging, reduce inflammation caused by UV radiation & suppress acne
-The shade growing of matcha elevates the L-theanine content, an amino acid that induces alpha frequency brain waves, resulting in mental calmness, improved concentration & memory, and relaxed alertness
-It naturally contains only 1/2 the caffeine of coffee
-The unique properties of matcha result in a calm energy that lasts for 5.5 hours on average, with no jitters, crash, or nervous energy

Matcha is clearly one of the healthiest foods in the world, so it naturally fits into the vision of Liquidology Bar. Local food blog joined in collaboration to bring the best organic matcha on the market to Liquidology’s premium line of fresh pressed drinks. Serving organic foods & knowing their source is a top priority at Liquidolgy, so using direct from the farm organic ENCHA matcha was the perfect match.
Combining matcha with Liquidology’s ‘Coco Bomb’ makes for the ultimate healthy energy drink: with electrolytes from the fresh young thai coconut water, medium chain fatty acids from the pressed coconut meat & the calming energy of matcha.

With such a vast array of physical & mental benefits, matcha is so much more than a drink. Matcha is a way of living. It nurtures the body & calms the mind- a retreat from the hectic, grounding us in the midst of our over-stimulated modern lives. Energizing yet relaxing, nourishing & protecting, matcha is the drink that keeps on giving…

The Juice Retreat ~ A liquid only juice cleanse.

ARE YOU READY FOR A JUICE RETREAT ~ A liquid only juice cleanse?

If you are interested a juice cleanse, and I know you are if you’re reading this, let me help you avoid the mistakes people make when it comes to participating in a cleanse (the same mistakes I made when I first started out).

Unfortunately, many of us are coming from the mindset that we have no willpower, we deserve punishment for what happened on National Donut Day, or we’re convinced that losing weight is when we can really live. So naturally when the “juice cleanse” is over all of that negative self talk is gonna make it really hard to feel like you DESERVE to take care of yourself and you’ll spiral at the first whiff of pizza.

Juice Cleanse1

Here are 4 mindsets to get into to create a positive juice retreat experience:

  • Think of it as a retreat & opportunity for you to reconnect to your body. Calling it a juice cleanse or detox might keep you in a restrictive mindset and if you have any tendency towards being rebellious, you’ll be fighting yourself the whole time. Prep yourself for an ENJOYABLE, well deserved retreat.
  • You get to spend your hard earned money taking care of yourself – lucky you! Do you know how many people don’t give themselves permission to FEEL GOOD? Not to mention a very small price to pay for your health.
  • Your body, mind & soul is ready to receive tons of nutrition, rest, ease & vitality.
  • There is nothing wrong with you. You are already an amazing human & this juice retreat is the perfect opportunity for you to remember that and treat yourself with loads of respect, self love, & yummy juice.

I’m here to highlight what the Juice Retreat (juice cleanse) and Juice Feast (more on that shortly) offer. Liquidologists, Jules & Jeff want to spread juicy wellbeing while keeping their smart, savvy customers educated & empowered. That’s why I love them. They’ve invited me here to give you the 411 on the juices, on how to get yourself in the cleanse mindset & share my expertise on creating a healthy lifestyle to support you during this juice adventure.

  • Organic, raw, cold pressed fruit & vegetable juices to supplement 1, 3 or 5 days of food. Or juice along with raw, vegan meals.
  • An opportunity for the digestive organs to rest & rejuvenate.
  • A party for your cells – they will be flooded with high-quality vitamins & nutrients as the cold press process breaks down the cell walls of the plant to extract the essentials nutrition.
  • Most importantly, a chance for your body to do what it does best, which is to achieve a state of balance.
  • The perfect way to curb any allergen & food cravings. Often we start to crave the very things that are not serving our best self like excess sugar, flour, alcohol, coffee drinks, dead food and reacquaint our taste buds with pure, organic, raw, earthy nutrients.
  • Time for YOU. Let’s face it, you don’t really have to worry about what to eat. It is a really intentional, respectful act of self-care for your mind, body & soul. Who doesn’t need some of that?

The Juice Retreat (juice cleanse) is juice only for 1, 3 or 5 days. See below for a sample day of juice.

A Juice Feast is for newbie juice cleansers. Man, I wish I had this option back when I was searching for better health. If you want to do a juice retreat but are totally nervous about committing to liquid only meals this option includes some seriously delicious raw food meals prepared by local raw, vegan restaurant The Green Boheme.

  • The most unique, brilliant part of this juice retreat (in addition to the self-care aspect) is the 2 servings of Sweetgrass, wheat grass and pineapple, each day. This gives you plant-based protein to keep you feeling more satisfied than most of juice “cleanses” you find.
  • Each cleansing day begins with a Sante, which is a cultured drink, giving your guts a dose of good bacteria to get things moving. Like I said, 3 servings of Sweet Grass as your protein source to keep your energy from crashing & blood sugar from spiking.
  • Two of Liquidology’s green juices, Vitality & Greenie in a Bottle are surprising & refreshingly delicious. Greenie is literally chock full of toxin neutralizing veggies, including the super herb parsley.
  • The coconut & turmeric in The Alchemist helps decrease inflammation & heal the intestinal tract. It’s a bonus that it tastes amazing!
  • The beautiful beet juice of We Got the Beet (or Bottoms Up!) will cleanse the blood & liver, while orange juice offers up the antioxidant punch of vitamin C.
  • The signature City Scout blend this summer, Summer Scout, is filled with blackberries and burdock root, which is another blood cleanser.
  • On the final day of the juice cleanse you’ll get the ultimate in detoxification from About Last Night, which contains activated coconut charcoal. This has been used for years to rid the body of chemical toxicity & poison. It’s the perfect way to end your cleansing before you transition to a whole foods diet (because you’re not going to ruin all the goodness you just created by taking down a pizza)
  • And if you’re beginning with a Juice Feast, you will get some delicious, surprisingly satisfying raw food meals too.

This is a day 1 sample of juices…

Sante (probiotic tea)

Sweet Grass

The Alchemist

Sweet Grass

Greenie in a Bottle

Bottle Rocket

City Scout

Cinnamon Coconut Water

About Last Night

Just give Liquidology a call at 916-970-5102 to order your choice of 1, 3 or 5 days for a Juice Retreat or a Juice Feast & to schedule pick-up at 4601 H Street in East Sacramento or at 1611 Lead Hill Blvd in Roseville.

They would just love it if you gave at least 48 hours notice before picking up your juicy goodness. This gives them time to get you the highest quality juice.

It also gives you an opportunity to prepare yourself for your personal health retreat by hydrating, phasing out food that you know doesn’t make you feel your best & making some space for taking fabulous care of yourself.

Juice Cleanse2

Keep drinking water: Juice is not meant to replace regular hydration. Keeping your water intake up between juices (and especially in the days leading up to your Juice Feast) will enhance the effects of all that nutrition while keeping your organs & tissues really happy.

Dry brushing: This is my favorite, especially during bathing suit season. Using a dry bristle brush, beginning at the feet, brush in strokes towards your heart. You can stop at your neck and avoid breasts. Dry brushing stimulates the lymphatic system, which acts like a drain for your body’s detoxifying processes. It’s easiest to do before you take a shower or bath and it also exfoliates the skin and can help with cellulite.

Gentle, cleansing exercise: This is probably not a great time to run or do really strenuous exercise. The goal of a juice retreat is for the body to rejuvenate & balance without enduring much stress. The best types of exercise while you’re in retreat is yoga, walking, Pilates, tai chi, or swimming.

Meditation: Think of it as a cleanse for your emotional body. Meditation is giving yourself space to just be. It’s not intended to make you stop thinking, it’s to help you look at all of those thoughts passing through and noticing them. It actually changes the brain + starts to turn the voice in your head to a much nicer, more compassionate one.

Journaling: When we write we can begin to figure ourselves out. So whether you just free write whatever pops in your head or you answer a question, it will lead you to learning something new, letting go of thoughts or feelings that you don’t need or just clearing the clutter hanging around in your head.

De-clutter: Find a drawer, a closet, a table, a room or your whole house and clean it out. Get rid of things you haven’t used in the last year, doesn’t fit or that has expired, organize what you do have. The state of our space is often a reflection of how we are feeling and cleaning it out feels pretty grounding.

Lastly, if you are looking for more ways to take the very best care of yourself & your health, I’d love to support you. Liquidology juice retreaters get $50 off a coaching session where we work to bring more lightness, vibrance & energy to your life through nutrition, mindset, movement & more.
